Does a hand poke tattoo hurt more?
Jackie Rye is known for being a gentle tattooist and the majority of their clients report that it is a much less painful experience than machine tattoos. There is significantly less damage being done to the skin as compared to machine tattoos.
But just like machine tattoos, the pain of a hand poke tattoo depends on your personal pain tolerance and the location of the tattoo. Some folks find hand poke tattoos to be more comfortable because there is less stimulation and Jackie Rye’s private studio, Betwixt Gallery, has a calm and relaxing atmosphere.
Will a hand poke tattoo last?
Yes! A professional hand poke tattoo is just as effective as a machine tattoo.
Hand poked tattoos can have more longevity than machine tattoos in areas like the hands, feet, and ears where tattoos tend to fade faster when done with machine. This is due to the precise nature of hand poked tattoos and the minimal amount of trauma occurring to the skin during tattooing, which reduces scar tissue.
What does a "hand poked" tattoo mean?
Hand poked tattoos, also known as stick and poke or machine-free tattoos, are tattoos done without a machine. Jackie Rye uses a needle and ink without the assistance of a tattoo machine.
Are hand poked tattoos safe?
Yes, when done by a professional who follows hygienic practices and local health department guidelines, hand poked tattoos are safe. Additionally, they cause less damage to the skin than machine tattoos.
For your health and safety, always ensure you are getting tattooed by a professional that follows your state regulations and licensing requirements. In Michigan, it is only legal to tattoo out of a licensed body art facility. Jackie Rye’s private studio is fully licensed (since 2020) and follows health and safety regulations strictly.
How do hand poked tattoos work?
The artist dips a needle in ink and then manually pokes it into your skin, creating a series of dots that form the design. It's an ancient, traditional method that requires patience and precision.
Are hand poked tattoos permanent?
Yes, just like machine tattoos, hand poked tattoos are meant to be permanent. However, how you care for your tattoos will determine their longevity.
How long has Jackie Rye been tattooing?
Jackie Rye started their tattoo apprenticeship in Grand Rapids in the late summer of 2018 and opened their own private studio, Betwixt Gallery, in February 2020.
