Ever walk into a tattoo shop and get the urge to leave your shoes by the door and get cozy on the couch?

Welcome to Betwixt Gallery - a tattoo shop + hair salon offering a private space for creative self expression. Jackie Rye created this to be a space for individuals to express and reclaim their identity through body adornment. Jackie’s partner, Tony Castillo of Neon Flux, now brings hair services to the studio.

Safety + Respect are at the core of Betwixt Gallery. This is a space welcoming of all and made for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ individuals.

When you walk into Betwixt Gallery, you will see artifacts from Jackie’s ancestral homelands, artworks from local + distant artists, a variety of plant friends, comfy furniture, and a fridge full of complimentary beverages.

You’re invited to make yourself at home and get comfortable while you wait for your service.

Jackie Rye

Jackie Rye has been tattooing since 2018 when they started an apprenticeship and opened Betwixt Gallery in February 2020 in Grand Rapids, MI. You can also find them in Los Angeles, CA and Brooklyn, NY and Puerto Rico when they do guest spots at other tattoo studios.

Jackie Rye finds inspiration for their tattooing in their ancestry.

As a mixed race individual with Native American ancestry, they were curious to understand what tattooing meant to all of their ancestors. That began a journey of reconnecting and researching. They have studied the anthropology and archaeology of tattooing extensively. You can find several books at their studio with information. photographs, and illustrations of tribal tattooing throughout time. Although they offer a variety of tattoo styles in their hand poked approach, they hold a special place in their heart for ancestral markings.

Jackie embraces a trauma-informed approach in their tattoo shop. Jackie has done several trauma informed trainings as well as other education and research on this stop to provide services where everyone feels safe. Jackie is known for their sound healing events and other healing ceremonies.

Prior to being a tattoo artist, Jackie Rye earned a degree in Mathematics + Statistics from University of Michigan in 2012 and had a career in Data Scientist in Marketing Analytics from 2012 - 2018. They were an expert in data visualization and focused their area of research on branding identity and consumer digital habits.
